Description

The effects of environrrLental conditions during seed formation on subsequent germination behavior of seeds were investigated with two lettuce cultivars MSU 15 and MSU 16. Dark germination behavior of MSU 15 seed was influenced by the day-1ength during the seed formation. However, the germination patterns of light requiring MSU 16 seed was not dependent on the day-1ength but rather the temperature experienced during seed formation. A11 the patterns of seed germination of MSU 15 and MSU 16 were Lurther modified during dry storage at 20°C in darkness. Three phases of germination patterns in both cultivars during dry storage were observed as follows: Phase I (for three months from harvest) : It is characterized by the relatively high dark germination and the inhibition caused by single blue or far-red break 15 min given at 12 hr after imbibition (in both cultivars). Phase 2 (4-8 months after harvest) : Remarkably low dark germination in both cultivars were promoted by 15 min red light break at 12 hr of imbibition. Phase 3 (9-15months after harvest) In this phase, high dark germination of MSU 15 seed was not affected by light break but low dark germination of MSU 16 seed was promoted by red light break and slightly inhibited by blue or far-red light.
