In order to determine the effect of Chlorella on resistance against disease of ayu, Plecoglossus altivelis, 1% of the extract from Chlorella vulgaris E-25 was added to composed feed which contained 4% of feed oil. The feed was fed to ayu having 12.9 g of average body weight during 55 days.<BR>1) Both growth rate and feed conversion efficiency were rather low in the group fed Chlorellaextract (experimental group) than the control group.<BR>2) The challenge tests by Vibrio anguillarum were carried out after 2 months' feeding of the extract.The survival rate of experimental group was superior to the control group when immersed in a bacterial suspension of 103 cells/ml.<BR>3) In the over-crowd rearing test, the control group was almost affected by an ulcerative dermal necrosis (UDN) -like ulcer disease and resulted in death, while the Chlorella-extract had an effect on depression of the case.<BR>4) Serum properties were analysed in the survived ayu in the over-crowd rearing test. The protein content (Biuret method) and lipid content (Sulfo-phospho-vanilline method) were high in the experimental group. The lipoperoxides content (Thiobarbituric acid-fluorophotometric method) was lower in the group. The abundant lipid in the serum of the experimental group were associated with the protein classified as globulin fraction.<BR>5) The feeding of Chlorella-extract to ayu was suggested to cause such a physiological merit as the increase of resistance against disease in compensation to suppression of growth.
