The only food that can be used to rear Panulirus phyllosoma larvae up to the puerulus stage is the fresh gonad of the blue mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis; however, there is no report that clarifies why the aforementioned mussel gonad is suitable for rearing phyllosoma. To verify its nutritional value for cultured phyllosoma larvae, we conducted rearing experiments of the larvae during the mid- and late-phyllosoma stages of the Japanese spiny lobster Panulirus japonicus, fed with mussel gonads at different stages of sexual maturity. The growth rate of the larvae fed with mature ovaries was higher than those with immature gonads and mature testes. In addition, the intermolt period was shortened when the larvae were fed with mature ovaries. Furthermore, nutritional analyses of mussel gonads revealed that triglycerides in neutral lipids, and highly unsaturated n-3 fatty acids are important nutrients that accelerate the growth of P. japonicus larvae.
