Migration, growth and feeding habits of juvenile ocellate puffer Takifugu rubripes were investigated using samples caught by small trawl net in Ise Bay from November to March and set nets in Kumano Nada from February to May during 2004-2007. Mean standard lengths increased rapidly from November to December to 19.1-21.3 cm. However, it decreased in January and had a tendency to increase gradually from February to March in Ise Bay. On the contrary, its size was about 2 cm larger in Kumano Nada than that of Ise Bay in February and March. It was suggested that larger sized juvenile ocellate puffer started to migrate from Ise Bay to Kumano Nada around December caused by the decrease in water temperature in Ise Bay. The main prey items were not only fishes but also various kinds of benthic animals such as crabs, polychaetes and mantis shrimps in Ise Bay, but poor except for fishes in Kumano Nada. Fishes were mainly Japanese anchovy in both areas. Besides, zoea and megalopa stages of crabs from January to March in Ise Bay and pteropods (sea butterfly) in 2006 in Kumano Nada frequently occurred, which indicated that ocellate puffer selectively fed on small sized pelagic animals.
