Effects of hypoxia on ventilation volume and ciliary movement were examined in the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas at 12, 20 and 27°C. The ciliary movement was measured with the aid of transportation velocity of a piece of vinyl film put on the gill surface. In the oxygen saturated condition, the rate of increase of the ciliary movement and the ventilation volume increased at a similar rate with increasing temperature. In the hypoxic condition, the ventilation volume increased as the oxygen pressure in the water fell to 20 mmHg, but decreased in 0 l/min/kg at 1.2 mmHg or less. The ciliary movement showed almost the same velocity at 80 mmHg or above, but decreased in 0 mm/min at 1.2 mmHg or less.
