Abstract

During a 6-year period from 1989 to 1994, we treated six patients with neurogenic tumor of the vagus nerve in parapharyngeal space. They were five schwannomas and one paraganglioma. We were successful to reach at parapharyngeal pace by pushing up the mandible after median mandibulotomy. This approach was extremely useful to avoid unexpected complication such as laceration of jugular vein or carotid arteries. We did not select subcapsular extirpation but total resection together with original nerve. Silicon injection was good enough to move paralysed vocal cord into paramedian position for better phonatory function.
