A multi-institutional questionnaire regarding chemotherapy procedures in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma receiving radiotherapy was conducted. Three-hundred and eighty-five patients were accumulated and 360 patients were the subjects for survival analysis. More than 80% of patients with stage II-IV disease received chemotherapy. Keratinizing histology was an independent prognostic factor indicating worse prognosis, and locoregional controls were significantly worse in these patients compared to those with non-keratinizing histology. Five-year overall survival rates in patients with stage I, II, III, and IV disease were 89%, 83%, 61%, and 48%, respectively in patients with non-keratinizing disease, whereas the rate was 49% in those with keratinizing disease. Concurrent, cisplatin-based chemotherapy achieved a significantly better relapse-free rate in patients with stage VI, non-keratinizing disease.
