Description
This paper firstly relates a power transmission system which the authors contrived using a gear coupling in order to prevent the effect of the errors in gears used in a lathe. Secondly, a new dynamic meshing tester designed and built by the authors to measure the accuracy of machine tool gears is introduced with some examples of the measured data. The object of the new power transmission system is to prevent the bending vibration of the main spindle caused by the errors in meshing gears. The additional bearings and a gear coupling both placed coaxially to the main spindle permit only the torque to transmit cutting off the undesirable radial force. It is ascertained that the system can prevent the bending vibration of the main spindle caused by errors in gears used in a lathe and the effect on the surface finish. The principle of the dynamic meshing tester is to estimate the gear accuracy by measuring the force on the supporting elastic levers on which the driven gear is mounted. It is pointed out that the meshing tester could measure the gear accuracy easily and in the operating condition. This tester has a variety of application not only in the machine tool gears, but also in the general power transmission gears.
