Description

In this paper, a new quick-stop, device for metal cutting research equipped with a tool dynamometer and an electro-mechanical trigger is introduced.<BR>By using this device, the time of the tool retraction can be set at any desired value after the commencement of cutting and cutting forces at that instant can also be measured. In this device, the speed of retraction of the cutting edge during the seperation process is found to be a function of the initial displacement of the coil spring driving the tool holder and its spring constant.<BR>Hence, if the change in tool rake angle during the tool retraction is negligible (i.e. within ±11°), a proper combination of the spring constant and the initial displacement, which equalizes the speed of tool retraction and cutting speed, can be determined.
