As a result of the demands for better and better performance in modern optical systems and with the advant of electronic computation methods in optical design, the requirement for the improvement of the fabrication techniques of aspheric surfaces is increasing.<BR>A machine has been developed for the fabrication of axially symmetric aspherics of optical uses, grinding, smoothing and polishing by the use of various tools, so that the accuracy of the fabrication may depend on the machine but not on the skill of an operator. This machine with high accuracy is composed of two main simple mechanisms, i.e., turning and swivelling of workpiece and rectilinear movement of a flat face of wheel. The arrangements was determined by the analysis of the relation between the aspheric surface and the flat face of the wheel which is tangent to the aspheric surface. Further, a special design has been made so as to obtain high surface accuracy and optical finish, by making successive use of a diamond wheel, a plastics bonded wheel and an elastic polishing wheel. Several machines are now in operation for a large scale production.<BR>In this paper, the principle and performance of this machine are described in details.
