Description

Paranasal fungal balls are relatively common in the unilateral maxillary sinus, but are rare in the frontal and bilateral sinuses. We present a case of concurrent fungal balls in the frontal sinus and the contralateral sphenoid sinus. A 71-year-old woman was referred to our department with suspected frontal sinusitis based on computed tomography (CT) finding. Since the CT showed a fungal ball in the left frontal sinus, we performed an endoscopic modified Lothrop procedure under general anesthesia. A post-operative CT revealed a fungal ball in the right sphenoid sinus that was localized to the lateral recess and was evident on the preoperative CT. We performed endoscopic sinus surgery with a hydrodebrider system for the fungal ball in the sphenoid sinus. Since the second operation, the patient has been followed for one year without recurrence.
