Japanese cypress pollen dispersal in the spring in Tokushima Prefecture measured in the 26 years from 1981 to 2007 averaged 560/cm2 annually-one third of that of cedar pollen at 1,760/cm2. Cypress pollen amounts varied annually but correlated positively with that of cedar pollen and with weather in the previous summer, although as not strongly as that between cedar pollen amounts and weather in the previous summer. Cypress pollen circulated the most from late March to late April, a month later than cedar pollen. Because cypress and cedar pollen have a common antigen, cypress pollen a month later prolongs and exacerbates spring pollinosis symptoms.
