Description
Meckel's diverticulum is a relatively rare disease of the gastrointestinal tract that requires surgical treatment when symptoms become manifest. The data of 17 patients who underwent surgery for Meckel's diverticulum between 2004 and 2014 were reviewed. The mean age of the patients was 42. 4 years (range: 3-78); 14 of them were men and 3 were women. The complications of Meckel's diverticulum include hemorrhage, intestinal obstruction and volvulus, and rarely, omental infarction and intra-abdominal hemorrhage. Complications were significantly more frequent in younger patients than in older patients. Ectopic gastric mucosa was present in three patients, all of whom had hemorrhage. Meckel's diverticulum is difficult to diagnose preoperatively. In fact, a preoperative diagnosis was made in only three of the patients in this study. In cases of acute abdomen of uncertain etiology, Meckel's diverticulum should be considered in the differential diagnosis, and once confirmed, appropriate treatment should be promptly instituted.
