Description

The diagnostic process in cases of coin lesions on chest X-ray film in our hospital is as follows : first, sputum examinations for three days, bronchoscopic examination for transbronchial brushing or transbronchial lung biopsy, and post bronchoscopic sputum examinations ; secondly, if the results of the above are negative, choice of other biopsy methods such as needle biopsy, cervical lymph node biopsy or mediastinoscopy ; and thirdly results are still negative, the indications of exploratory thoracotomy are determined primarily on the basis of the X-ray findings. During the last five years, 126 patients with coin lesions of less than 4 cm in diameter underwent the diagnostic examinations mentioned above in our hospital. At the first step, the rate of definitive diagnosis was made in 63 out of 126 (50.0%), and in the first two steps a definitive diagnosis was made in 70 out of 126 (55.6%). Exploratory thoracotomy was performed in 29 patients (21.4%) of which 20 patients (69.0%) had tumor. The final diagnosis of these 126 patients was lung cancer in 64, other tumors in 11, pulmonary tuberculosis in 22 and other inflammatory diseases in the remainder.
