Description
In order to summarize data about smoking habits among members of the Japan Society for Bronchology, a questionnaire was distributed during the 18th annual meeting. A total of 748 out of 943 were returned, a 79% recovery rate. The percentage of smokers was 22%. Smoking was prohibited in the hospitals of 59 (8%) respondents. Eighty-two percent reported that patient smoking areas were separated from patient non-smoking areas, while only 39% reported physician smoking areas to be separated from physician non-smoking area. Tobacco was being sold in about 60% of the hospitals represented, either by vending machines or through hospital retail stores. In contrast, non-smoking area were preferred by 82% of the respondents. Questions of ethics in medicine are highlighted by this questionnaire. The obvious issues involved are whether or not both patients and physicians should be required to stop smoking in the health care environment. The larger issue is the degree and method by which the Japan Society of Bronchology should involve itself in active smoking reform for the sake of society in general.
