Description

We quantified the response of three different anesthetic gas monitors to several aerosol propellants.
Method: For anesthetic gas monitors, we used Ohmeda 5250 (OM), Altima 206 (AL) and Bruel Kjaer 1304 (BK). For aerrosol propellants, we used procaterol (Meptin® air) and nitroglycerin inhalant (Myocor® spray and Nitorol® spray). Test gases containing concentrations of one puff/L of room air were introduced to the gas monitors.
Results: Meptin® air showed high readings of isofurane (I) (5.3±1.2%), halothane (H) (5.0±0.2%) and sevoflurane (S) (6.4±0.4%) with BK, slight increase with AL and no change with OM. Myocor® spray showed slight increases with OM and BK, and no change with AL. Nitorol® spray showed a high reading of halothane (8.3±1.9%) and slight incerases of isoflurane (1.6±0.8%) and sevoflurane (1.1±0.5%) with OM, and no increase in BK and AL.Discussion: Meptin® air contains Freon 11, Freon 12 and Freon 114 which have structural similarity to halogenated volatile anesthetics. Myocor® spray and Nitorol® spray contain ethanol which absorbs light of 3.3μm which OM uses in its measurement of anesthetic gases. Myocor® spray also contains Freon 134a which has structural similarity to halogenated volatile anesthetics. When we use aerosol during anesthesia, we should be aware of the component of the aerosol propellants and characteristics of the anesthetic gas monitor.
