Description

We evaluated the effect of the Valsalva maneuver on the overlap between the internal jugular vein (IJV) and the carotid artery (CA) and the change of the IJV diameter with an ultrasound technique. The advantage of the Valsalva maneuver for IJV cannulation was discussed. The percent overlap at the Valsalva maneuver (mean value 22.4%) significantly decreased (p<0.05) comparing to the percent overlap at rest (mean value 15.2%). In addition, the IJV was dilated toward both transverse and perpendicular directions by the Valsalva maneuver, significantly in the perpendicular direction (p<0.05). We demonstrated that the Valsalva maneuver not only dilated the IJV but also decreased the overlap between IJV and CA. This results show that the Valsalva maneuver at IJV cannulation decreases the risk of accidental CA puncture.
