Description
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001 was designed and published in 1996 as the specifications for use of environmental management systems. It was certified and registered that Kariya General Hospital has implemented and improved this system complying with those requirements in 2000. In the Department of Anesthesia, we established four targets: (1) cutting electricity consumption, (2) reduction of refuse, (3) reducing the consumption of Xerox paper, (4) reduction of nitrous oxide use. Most of these targets were achieved; in particular, the use of nitrous oxide for general anesthesia was nearly completely abolished.
