Description

The effects of epidural anesthesia, including the effect of combined spinal anesthesia, sometimes continue after surgery, possibly causing prolonged motor blockade for a considerable period of time. This involves the risk of masking the rare but significant complications affecting the spinal cord. Prolonged motor blockade can also precipitate peripheral nerve complications, deep venous thrombosis and connective tissue disorders. To avoid prolonged motor blockade, it is essential to select the optimal type and concentration of local anesthetic tailored to the operative procedure and the preoperative condition of the individual patient.
