Description
ERAS protocol is already spreading over the world, including in Japan. Japanese Society for Surgical Metabolism and Nutrition started a project since 2012 to enhance physical recovery of patient after surgery according to Japanese own situation. ESSENSE is a name of the project, which is an abbreviation of ESsential Strategies for Early Normalization after Surgery with patient's Excellent satisfaction. Among the ERAS protocols and additional products of the society, essential strategies are conducted into 4 keywords as below ; 1. Modulation of host response to surgical insults, 2. Early restoration of physical activity, 3. Early recovery of normal nutrition intake, 4. Encouragement of motivation for recovery with reduction of the anxiety. Concerned papers are introduced in internet site of the society and clinical application of ESSENSE idea will be discussed in the annual meeting.<br>ERAS protocol provides 22 medical interventions those are performed by staff, but ESSENSE project provides just 4 objects to achieve in patient itself. Sharing these ideas among medical staff will be encouraged for the improvement of peri-operative care. Appropriate evaluation and sharing the clinical questions about how the patient's physically recovered is essential, more than how much medical intervention is performed.
