Description

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of starting timing in shoulder range of motion rehabilitation after breast cancer operation on the duration of wound drainage.
Methods: A total of 22 patients with breast cancer from Sept.2010 to Nov.2014 were enrolled in a retrospective study after total mastectomy with axillary or sentinel lymph node dissection. Patients in group 1 (n=13) started shoulder range of motion rehabilitation on the fifth postoperative day before pulling out drainage tube. Patients in group 2 (n=9) started shoulder range of motion rehabilitation on the day after pulling out drainage tube. We compared group 1 to group 2 on the duration and amount of wound drainage and hospitalization.
Results: There were no significant differences of the duration and amount of wound drainage between two groups. However, group 2 was significant shorter hospitalization than group 1.
Conclusion: We recommend that shoulder range of motion rehabilitation starts on the fifth postoperative day before pulling out drainage tube.
