抄録

The study on the method of evaluation for the performance of measuring instrument using micrometers is conducted. The performance of a measuring instrument is defined as the degree of its ability to fill the needs of the user, and the points of evaluation have been determined based on the results of the questionairs directed to the users of micrometers. Of these points of evaluation, nine relatively important points have been selected first, then they have been condensed to three points, that is, the measurement error, measuring force and operational facility. Then, the factorial effects are obtained using the method of the factorial experiment. In this case, the concept of error coefficient which is the ratio for the error of repeatability is introduced, then the measurement error and measuring efficiency, which are selected as the finally important points, are converted into the measuring cost. As the result, it is clarified that the measuring cost varies cosiderably depending on the construction of the measuring instrument and how it has been used. Moreover, measurement error cannot be represented adequately as the repeatability ±2μm on the contrary to the general belief, and thus it is necessary to use the error coefficient according to the condition of the use of the measuring instrument.
