Abstract

The contribution of material damping to the control of mechanical vibrations has been investigated with samples of SIA (ferro-magnetic type of high damping alloy). It is found, by applying the Merritt's chart to the stability-criterion for a machine structure system, that the material damping effect increases the system-stability by 500% in its most effective operation, and that the damping property of the SIA-structure system vs. the vibrational stress amplitudes has a maximum at strain level of 3-4 × 10-4. The latter fact is successfully explained by means of a mechanical model composed of a non-linear spring (magneto-mechanical hysteresis), a dash-pot (external damping), and a mass. The power-spectrum analysis for the vibrations propagated from a vibration source (upright drilling machine) shows that the material damping has an excellent suppression effect on the resonant vibrational components, and also that the degree of suppression increases with increase in the order of resonant frequencies.
