Abstract

An effective lapping system for decreasing the waviness of ultra-precision steel balls is proposed. The relationship between the waviness on the ball surface and the characteristics of grinding wheels is analysed. Experimental analyses using grinding wheels of several kinds of grain sizes and grades show the following results. The grinding wheel with low grade is effective to reduce the magnitude of low order harmonics (2nd-5th) of the waviness. The medium order harmonics (5th-30th) and high order harmonics (30th-166th) are reduced well by the grinding wheel with low grade and fine sized grain at low removal rate. The waviness magnitude of low and medium order harmonics after lapping depends on the magnitude before lapping, while that of high order harmonics is not influenced by the initial magnitude. From these results, a two-stepped lapping system using two kinds of grinding wheels (WA 3 000 X → WA 8 000 X) is proposed to decrease the magnitude in all orders of harmonics effectively. The steel balls lapped by this system show improved waviness and the following figures; roundness= 29 nm and roughness Ra= 2 nm.
