Description

Early diagnosis and early treatment is one of the most effective strategies to improve prognosis of patients with gastrointestinal tract cancers. Because appearance of the early stage gastrointestinal tract cancers is usually too subtle to be recognized in conventional white light endoscopy, chromoendoscopy has been used in clinical practice in Japan. In 2000s, equipment-based image enhanced endoscopy (IEE) that uses optical and digital technique to enhance the characteristics of superficial lesion has been developed instead of dye-based image enhanced endoscopy (chromoendoscopy). The equipment-based IEE enables us to evaluate vascular architecture in the mucosa precisely and improve diagnostic accuracy for superficial neoplasia in the gastrointestinal tract. Recently, the new generation equipment-based IEEs have been launched from several developers and their clinical usefulness are being investigated.
