Abstract

We report on the details of the project that was recently undertaken by Japan Otological Society (JOS), named “the nationwide database system of human temporal bone histopathological specimens”. In this project, a working group was organized to investigate all the human temporal bone specimens preserved in the laboratories in the universities, and to make the database. Members of JOS can freely access the database uploaded on the JOS homepage, and they can know number and distribution of specimens of normal or a certain ear disease. They can even actually see the specimens that they want by visiting the facility. Thus, this database system is expected to contribute to the further development of otological research and education in Japan. In this report, details, advantages and disadvantages of this database system are addressed.
