Description
Simple underlay myringoplasty (SUM) with fibrin glue is a useful procedure for chronic otitis media with simple perforation of the tympanic membrane. We used autologous fibrinogen from the patient's own blood instead of commercial products in order to reduce the possibility of viral contamination and allergic reactions to SUM. We evaluated the postoperative results in terms of closure rate and hearing improvement.<br>SUM with autologous fibrinogen was applied to 14 ears of 12 patients with a perforated tympanic membrane. The closure rate associated with SUM with autologous fibrinogen was 92.9% (13 of 14 ears). According to the criteria of Otology Japan (2000), the rate of successful hearing improvement was 71.4% (10 of 14 ears). The mean postoperative hearing improvement was 11.55dB. We conclude that SUM with autologous fibrinogen is a useful procedure.
