Abstract

This research considers the feature of the traditional dwelling of Huizhou district based on the investigation conducted for Cheng-kan village. First, a survey investigation was conducted in Cheng-kan village of typical examples of dwellings remaining from the Ming and Qing Dynasties, as well as those of the Republic of China. Restoration work was also done. Furthermore, they were analyzed by genre and an understanding of the regularity of the space composition of a dwelling was gained. Consequently, it became clear that the central part of the dwelling consists of a repetition of a basic pattern, and that the arrangement is strongly influenced by ancestor worship, which is the basis of a patriarchal clan organization mentality. It also became clear that the space concept which reflected social structure is closely related to a dwelling's composition and design.
