Description

The roof in traditional Japanese Architecture has a complex typology and is an interesting element in the design of the facade. There are various roofing materials and three basic roofs forms: hipped, gabled and hipped-gabled. These materials and forms are combined and used together. Through the analysis of the roof plan of the pre-war Showa Japanese style house "Kokian" we will see the importance of the roof design, its meaning and relation with the spatial organization of the plan and gardens. This analysis consists of comparing the roof plan with the ground floor plan and the site plan of the residence Kokian. First we will identify each of the different spaces of the house, their function, position in the plan, and hierarchical level in the spatial organization. Then we will compare it with the roof typology and establish a relation between the" roof form and the plan organization. We will see that the form of the roof changes according to the hierarchical status of the space it shelters, how it is used as a design tool to represent the different spaces of the house, and as an element composing the fa9ade and the view from the garden,
