Abstract

The aim of this paper is to indicate the hypothesis on the evolution of the Armenian churches from the fourth to the seventh centuries. According to the previous researches, the stylistic development is negatively recognized in the early Armenian churches. This paper verifies on this point by classifying the churches based on the domed composition as a new angle of classifications, in contrast with the previous studies. With this classification, eight basic types in architecture are distinctively recognized. Furthermore, from a structural point of view as well as a work-procedure in the architectural site, the evolution in accord with the time is logically distinguished within eight fundamental types as a genealogy. As a result, the hypothesis is presented that the Hrypushime type as one of the eight basic types seems to be attributed to the final stage of the evolution in the early Armenian churches.
