Abstract
In this paper, the influence of the Scottish Enlightenment theory of the Ideal Society on the development of the first New Town of Edinburgh, one of the major urban developments in eighteenth century Europe, is considered focusing on; 1) the members of the leading circle of the Scottish Enlightenment, many of whom were associated with the New Town project; and, 2) the provisions of building which were published by the Town Council of Edinburgh in 1768 as an Act.
