Abstract

Hepatocytes were obtained from rat liver and maintained in primary culture for periods up to 14 days. Collagen synthesis was maximal after 3-5 days and declinied thereafter. Collagen types were identified with DEAE-cellulose, Agarose A15 m and CM-cellulose coloum chromatography. Type I procollagen and pepsin treated type I collagen were identified as a 450, 000 dalton molecule and a 95, 000 daoton molecule, respectively.<BR>Type III procollagen was suggested with DEAE-cellulose chromatography, but pepsin treated type III ollagen was not identified. These data suggest that rat hepatocytes in primary culture are capable of interstitial type I collagen and, presumably, type III collagen production.
