Abstract

A clinicopathological study was carried out in patients with seroconversion from e antigen to e antibody in HBsAg positive chronic active hepatitis. Liver biopsy specimens were obtained from 7-CAH patients during the positive e antigen and all showed histological features comprised of severe portal inflammation, picemeal necrosis, rosettes formation, ballooning of hepatocytes and parenchymal inflammation, even with lobular dysorganization. In all the 7 patients with chronic active hepatitis in the initial biopsy who seroconverted, liver histology and change during the follow up period: 2 of them developed histological features of superimposed cirrhosis, one of them remained unchanged while the other 4 showed regression to chronic persistent hepatitis. In patients with seroconversion from e antigen to e antibody, subjects biopsies remained improved histological features comprised of portal inflammation, picemeal necrosis, rosettes formation, parenchymal inflammation and ballooning of hepatocytes.
