Abstract

The effects of saikosaponin extracted from roots of Bupleurum falcatum L. to hepatic injury by D-galactosamine have been studied and the pharmacological function of saikosaponin to the liver cells has been also discussed.<BR>An administration of D-galactosamine to a rat causes a remarkable increase of serum GOT and GPT and the histological changes of liver, but a treatment by saikosaponin after 2 hrs of an injection of D-galactosamine inhibited the increase of serum GOT and GPT and the histological damages of liver tissue. In addition, a pretreatment of saikosaponin before 2 hrs of D-galactosamine injection was more effective for the hepatic injury induced by D-galactosamine. It was suggested from these results that the subcellular enzyme induction by saikosaponin or the direct effects of saikosaponin to cell membranes may play an important role to protect the liver from the injury induced by Dgalactosamine.
