Abstract

Carotene is a dye which exists in normal human serum. This dye is absorbed from foods through the intestine. A case who reveals moderate hypercarotenemia with psychoneuropathy is reported, especially the liver histology. The light microscopic findings is normal except lipofuscin-like pigments. The electronmicrographs shows the slightly increased reticulum fiber in Disse's space. Smooth surfaced endoplasmic reticulum is fragmented and round. Rough surfaced endoplasmic reticulum is unstratified. Most of mitochondria is deformitied and swollen, though some mitochondria shows paracrystalline inclusion.<BR>The relation between this case and constitutional hyperbilirubinemia on electronmicrographs is discussed.
