Flying characteristics of a flexible disk rotating on an air thrust bearing is investigated theoretically and experimentally. The system is a basic model of a non-contact flexible disk recording device. The analysis is conducted by solving a rotating disk equation and a Reynolds equation simultaneously for the system with a four-pocket bearing on one side of the disk. The experiment is conducted using 3.5 inch flexible disks that are on the market. The analytical and experimental results for the rotating velocity of 900 rpm show the following. (1) The flying characteristics can be quantitatively simulated by an analysis including gravity and air inertia. (2) The effect of centrifugal stress, lateral inertia, initial stress and Young's modulus fluctuation between disks can be neglected in the analysis. (3) The maximum air film pressure occurs at the outlet points of the pockets, though the maximum deflection occurs at the midpoints of the bearing lands. (4) The spacing between the disk and the bearing surface is not affected by the hub height when it is small.
