Fifty-two cases of dermatophytosis caused byMicrosporum canisseen at our out-patient clinic, were studied. In addition, 397 reported cases with this dermatophytosis in Japan except for Hokkaido district were reviewed. More than 50% of the patients were younger than 10 years of age. Females were more frequently affected than males. With regard to age and sex, nearly 80% of the male patients were younger than 10-years-old, while the females were rather evenly distributed in every generation. The clinical pictures were classified into 3 types, according to the distribution of the lesions: the scalp (type I), the areas other than scalp (type II), and both of these areas (type III). Type II was most frequently observed, while type III was the least. Majority of the patients of type I and III were younger than 10-years-old, whereas type II was seen in every generation. Most of the type II patients were females.M. canisinfection was observed throughout the year, though most frequently in summer. Concerning the source of infection, about 80% of the patients were considered to be infected from cats. Epidemics in families were observed in 60%. The lesions infected from the same animal were limited to either one of type I or II, while in the reported cases, a few patients with more than two types of I, II and III were observed.
