抄録

In 1955, about 12, 000 infants were poisoned by arsenic which had contaminated powdered milk. This has been referred to as the mass arsenical poisoning due to powdered milk during infancy. When some of them were followed up by dermatologists in 1982, 50 were found to have punctate hypomelanosis and/or palmo-plantar keratotic papules.
In 1997 and 1998, we carried out a follow-up survey at 16 facilities to examine changes in these cutaneous lesions specific to chronic arsenical poisoning. The subjects of the survey included 24 of the 50 patients mentioned above. Of these 24 patients, 20 still had punctate hypomelanosis and 8 had palmo-planter keratotic papules (7 had both types of lesion).
On the whole, the punctate hypomelanosis tended to subside, while the palmo-plantar keratotic papules tended to become more marked. In some patients, diffuse keratosis or tylosis of the planta had complicated their condition.
In addition to these 24 patients, some other patients, who received dermatological check-ups during this survey period for the first time, were found to have punctate hypomelanosis and/or palmo-plantar keratotic papules.
We thus found that eruptions caused by arsenical poisoning by means of periodic follow-ups of these patients.
