Abstract

Biopsied specimens from eight patients with strawberry mark were studied by an electron microscope.
By clinical course, each lesions were classified into three stages : proliferative, stationary and regressive.
The characterristic finding of the proliferative stage were remarkable increase of micro-filaments in endothelial cytoplasm and presence of wave-like multi-layered basal lamina. As the stage of stawberry mark shifted to stationary and then to regressive, the basal lamina became to show more apparent formation of multi-layers which were united with each other to become thick-ened.
Besides, intracytoplasmic organellae in endoth elial cells decreased, and vacuoles in them came to be noted.
From these findings, it was concluded that multi-layered basal lamina would be a major factor for spontaneous healing of strawberry mark, and that some of strawberry mark might remain for long because some of proliferating capillaries might grow up to be small vessels with a muscle layer.
