Description

A case report of internal jugular phlebectasia in an 8-month-old girl is reported. Internal jugular phlebectasia is rare in children and 29 cases have been reported in Japanese literature. This patient was referred to our hospital with a giant left cervical soft tumor which had been increasing gradually. We suspected this case as a neck lymphangioma at her admission, but the cervical tumor became bigger when getting angry or crying bitterly. More detailed examinations were performed to get a correct diagnosis of internal jugular phlebectasia before operation. She underwent the operation and was discharged at postoperative day 7. Pathological evaluation showed tunica thickness of the vessel, Although the pathogenesis of this disease is still unclear, we suppose that congenital anatomical anomaly with acquired vessel weakness or thinning is related to this disease. In most cases, surgical intervention is not required except in patients with large or progressive tumor.
