Description
Choledocholithiasis in infants is rare. We report a case of a 3-month-old infant with choledocholithiasis, which presumably resulted from operations for HLHS. At 2 months of age, acholic stool and elevation of serum level of biliary enzymes were noticed. Ultrasonography demonstrated cholecystolithiasis and choledocholithiasis. An operation was performed. The diameter of the common bile duct was 4mm and T-tube drainage was impossible. Therefore, after primary choledocholithotomy, a transcystic duct drainage tube (C-tube) was placed. Six days after surgery, cholangiography via the C-tube showed good patency without anastomotic stenosis, so the C-tube was removed. His postoperative course was uneventful. Although in adult cases C-tube placement is becoming standard procedure, its employment has not been reported in small children. In this report the authors emphasize the usefulness of C-tube placement in infants. It should be a standard procedure in the treatment of choledocholithiasis in children, especially in infants.
