Description

Two cases of generalized herpes zoster are reported. Case 1: A 76-year-old man whose general health was good was seen on August 14, 1981, with ordinary herpes zoster on the left chest and back. On August 18, numerous varicella-like eruptions were observed on his entire body, except for his palms. Case 2 : An otherwise healthy 30-year-old man visited us with ordinary herpes zoster on his right chest and back. Several days after the first examination, a few or several erythema and vesicles were scattered on his right shoulder, extremities and face. The cutaneous lesions in herpes zoster are usually localized in a few contiguous dermatoms. However, hematogenous dissemination of virus occurs occasionally, which becomes generalized herpes zoster. This disorder can be divided into two clinical forms that differ in the distribution of disseminated eruptions. One type is characterized by several vesicles scattered in various parts of the body. And, another type shows numerous eruptions appearing on the whole body assuming varicella-like distribution. Varicella Zoster Virus was detected, respectively, in vesicle-lids of disseminated eruptions from these 2 patients by an indirect immunofluorescent antibody technique.
