The isolated gall bladder of the guinea-pig was used in these experiments, and the following conclusions were obtained.
1) The gall bladder exhibited three kinds of contraction : a local contraction, a peristalisis creeping from the cervix portion to the fundus portion, and a tonic contraction.
The first two of these are believed to perform the functions of filling the gall bladder and agitating the bile ; the latter then exhausts the bile into the bile duct.
2) The cervix portion showed greater electrical and contractile activity than the fundus portion. It is suggested that the extent of excitation and the coordination of muscle fibers in the cervix exceeds that in the fundus portion.
3) There is a significant histological difference between the cervix and f undus.
4) Progesterone inhibited contraction of the gall bladder. This inhibitory mechanism was examined, especially in relation to calcium, and it was tentatively concluded that progesterone inhibits the mobility of intracellular calcium as well as the movement of calcium through the cell membrane.
It is further suggested that progesterone may inhibit excitation caused by intercellular conduction between adjacent membranes.
