Abstract

Carcinoid tumor of the breast is quite rare, and only 32 cases have been reported in Japan. Furthermore, there have been no reports of carcinoid tumors in the bilateral breasts. A 50-year-old woman who had undergone a mastectomy for right breast cancer in 1982 had noticed a palpable benign tumor in the DE region of the left breast at that time. The tumor enlarged slowly and was exposed at the nipple in May 2002. The patient was admitted to the hospital in September 2002, when the tumor, which resembled a cauliflower in shape, protruded through the nipple; and another tumor was found in the C region of the left breast. Aspiration cytology revealed left breast cancer. A mastectomy was performed. The tumor was composed of small cells arranged in a trabecular pattern. The results from a Chromogranin stain were positive. The tumor was ER-and PgR-positive and the axillary lymph nodes were involved.
