Description

A patient developed a right-sided chylous fistula after axillary lymph node dissection. The 63-year-old woman developed a painful right breast lump. The patient had preoperative chemotherapy and a partial mastectomy along with a lymph node dissection (level I, II, III nodes). On the 2nd postoperative day (POD), a milky fluid discharge was noted from the axillary drain. A chylous fistula was diagnosed, and the patient was treated conservatively ; oral feeding was stopped, and total parental nutrition was started. The milky white discharged ceased promptly. However, a clear fluid discharge was observed after the ingestion of a low fat diet. By the 13th POD, this discharge no longer occurred. The patient was discharged on the 14th POD.
