Description

A 41-year-old woman with chronic idiopathic colonic pseudo-obstruction (CICP) underwent partial colectomy two times after various conservative therapies were not entirely effective. Subtotal colectomy including dilated colon reduced the abdominal complaint.
CICP is characterized by massive dilatation of the colon without any organic obstruction. The etiology of this disease is unknown and is an isolated condition rather than a part of chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (CIIP), in which abnormal motilities appear throughout the entire gastro-intestinal tract.
Twenty-nine cases between 1981 and 1997, including our case, were retrospectively reviewed from the Japanese literature. Either total or subtotal colectomy is required when conservative managemant, such as colonic decompression or medical treatment fails.
