Description

Here, we report a rare case of resectable localized malignant peritoneal mesothelioma in the mesoileum. An 80-year-old woman was emergently admitted to the hospital because of hypogastralgia, diagnosed as having postoperative adhesive intestinal obstruction, and successfully treated by conservative therapy. However, abdominal CT scan conducted on admission revealed a round-shaped tumor 3cm in diameter in the abdomen. No definite diagnosis was made after various examination, and laparotomy was performed. During surgery, the tumor with pedicle arisen in the mesoileum was identified and resected. Histological and immunohistological examinations revealed the tumor to be localized peritoneal malignant mesothelioma. The patient has been free from recurrence and metastasis for 1.5 years.<br> In general, peritoneal malignant mesotheliomas are classified into the diffuse type, which are often unresectable and have a poor prognosis, while the localized mesotheliomas are often reported to have a good prognosis like in this case.
