Description

Leiomyosarcoma in the mesocolon is rare, and only 1 case of leiomyosarcoma in the descending mesocolon has been reported in Japan. We report a case of leiomyosarcoma derived from the descending mesocolon. A 46-year-old woman presented to a local hospital because of left abdominal pain. Ultrasonography of the abdomen revealed a 6-cm mass, and she was referred to our hospital for further examination. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging of the abdomen revealed a well-demarcated heterogeneous tumor adjacent to the descending colon. Tumor resection was performed, revealing that the tumor was located in the descending mesocolon. Although the tumor was adhered to the retroperitoneum, we were able to remove it by incision of the subperitoneal fascia ; the tumor was presumably derived from the descending mesocolon. Histopathological examination revealed atypical spindle cells, for which immunohistochemistry was positive for vimentin, α-SMA, calponin 1, and caldesmon ; the cells were negative for c-kit. The tumor was diagnosed as leiomyosarcoma. Although it exhibited a high nuclear grade with an MIB-1 index of 60%, follow-up examinations 9 months postoperatively revealed no signs of recurrence.
