Abstract

A 59-year-old male noticed a slow growing, right breast mass. An incisional biopsy was performed and a malignancy was suspected. The patient had a total mastectomy and axillary lymph node dissection. Based on immunohistochemical staining with neuron-specific enolase, the tumor was diagnosed as a neuroendocrine carcinoma. Estrogen and progesterone receptors were positive, and HER2 was negative. Lymph node metastases were found, and vessel invasion was positive. The patient subsequently received adjuvant chemotherapy (FEC followed by docetaxel). Tamoxifen administration is ongoing.<BR>Male breast carcinoma accounts for approximately 0.5-1.0% of all breast carcinomas ; primary breast neuroendocrine carcinomas are very rare. Furthe research based on the compilation of the data from such cases is necessary to guide treatment.
