Abstract

An 84-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with a complaint of pelvic, posterior thigh, and right lower abdominal pain. Computed tomography demonstrated an 8-cm, solid cystic mass of the right ovary with herniation into the right greater sciatic foramen. A laparoscopic approach was used to release the incarcerated sciatic hernia. The incarcerated ovarian cyst was reduced with light traction, and then a right oophorectomy was performed. The sciatic foramen defect was identified and repaired by covering the right broad ligament of the uterus with suture. The patient had an uneventful postoperative course and was discharged on postoperative day 6. One year follow-up showed no evidence of recurrence.<BR>A sciatic hernia involves herniation through the sciatic foramen. A laparoscopic approach for repair of a sciatic hernia is very rare. This case was presented and discussed in the context of a review of the literature on sciatic hernia.
